چکیده
The decline of shark populations in the world ocean is affecting ecosystem structure and function an unpredictable way new ecological information today needed to better understand role sharks their habitats. In particular, characterization foraging patterns crucial foresee evolution dynamics between prey. Many species use mesopelagic area as a major ground but degree which different pelagic rely on this habitat remains overlooked. order depict vertical dimension trophic ecology, we used mercury stable isotopes muscle three (the blue Prionace glauca, shortfin mako Isurus oxyrinchus smooth hammerhead Sphyrna zygaena) from northeastern Pacific region. Δ199Hg values, ranging 1.40 2.13‰ sharks, suggested diet mostly based prey oceanic We additionally carbon nitrogen (δ13C, δ15N) alone or combination with assess resource partitioning species. Adding resulted decrease overlap estimates compared those δ13C/δ15N alone, demonstrating that multi-isotope modeling for accurate description Mainly, it reveals they forage at average depths expressed through within assemblages. Concomitantly, total concentration (THg) differed increased feeding depth. Overall, study highlights key zone among important depth gradients reports competition using isotopes. It also suggests may play pivotal differences THg co-occurring high level

Mercury methylation in estuaries: Insights from using measuring rates using stable mercury isotopes
Rates of mercury (Hg) methylation and methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation in sediment of the Hudson River, Chesapeake Bay and Bay of Fundy were measured using stable isotopes of mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg). Methylation of the isotope correlated well with in situ MeHg concentration, and MeHg turnover times were on the order of days. It was concluded that methylation was more important t...

متن کاملLinking mercury, carbon, and nitrogen stable isotopes in Tibetan biota: Implications for using mercury stable isotopes as source tracers
Tibetan Plateau is located at a mountain region isolated from direct anthropogenic sources. Mercury concentrations and stable isotopes of carbon, nitrogen, and mercury were analyzed in sediment and biota for Nam Co and Yamdrok Lake. Biotic mercury concentrations and high food web magnification factors suggested that Tibetan Plateau is no longer a pristine site. The primary source of methylmercu...
متن کاملStable Isotopes in Early Eocene Mammals as Indicators of Forest Canopy Structure and Resource Partitioning
—The three dimensional structure of vegetation is an important component of ecosystems, yet it is difficult to reconstruct from the fossil record. Forests or woodlands prevailed at mid-latitudes in North America during the early Eocene but tree spacing and canopy structure are uncertain. Here we use stable carbon isotope values (!13C ) in early Eocene mammalian faunas to infer canopy structure....

Methylmercury (MeHg) exposure can cause adverse health effects in children and adults and is predominantly from seafood consumption in the United States (U.S.). Here we examine evidence for differences in MeHg uptake and metabolism in U.S. individuals who consume three or more fish meals per week. We hypothesized based on prior research that some individuals have enhanced capacity to demethylat...
